A Brand Language With Rock & Roll Roots |

Chophouse
Records have been releasing some of the world’s heaviest rock
music for over twelve years. In 2002, when launching their label
on the web, they asked Manmade to provide art direction for the
site.
In contrast to the majority of our web design
work, Chophouse had specific instructions that their site “not
look anything like a web site”. Based on discussions with the
label, our research into a suitably “down home” visual
direction led to Nashville show bills from the 40’s and 50’s.
To capture the raw, handmade feel of these screen-printed posters,
wood type was borrowed from friendly printers, scanned, and organized
into a series of alphabets. Each band on the label now has their own
wordmark set using these letters.

This approach to their online aesthetic got a great reception from
both the label staff and the bands themselves. In addition to the
website, Chophouse Records asked us to apply the typographic style
to CD packaging, print advertising, and even t-shirts.

As part of our ongoing work with the label, Manmade has also produced
the web site, CD packaging, print advertising and online promotions
for Voivod, an established Canadian band that recently joined the
Chophouse roster.

“Working with Manmade has
been a great experience. Their passion for what they do is evident
in the level of research and attention to detail they applied
to our websites.”
